This category: ● Emphasizes preservation of beneficial aspects of the patient’s situation that are threatened by illness or actual or potential problems. Agency rests with the nurse, but he or she acts to conserve the existing capabilities of the patient (Barnum, 1998). Substitution Category of Knowledge. Davis. Chapter 1 • THE STRUCTURE OF CONTEMPORARY NURSING KNOWLEDGE Orlando, Parse, Peplau, and Watson are unique nursing theories. Many other theories used by nurses have been borrowed from other disciplines. Theories of stress, coping, locus of control, reasoned action, planned behavior, and self-efficacy are just a few examples of borrowed theories. Unfortunately, few nurses have attempted to present a rationale for the use of such theories as guides for nursing research or practice by linking the theory with a nursing conceptual model.
