Escaping the familiar: the power of metaphor At the heart of systems thinking is the use of metaphor and analogy.

Metaphorical statement is not a substitute for formal comparison or any other kind of literal statement, but has its own distinctive capacities and achievements. (Black, 1962:46) Metaphor and analogy can have at least two potential applications. The first is to use them to generate high level abstractions about similarities and common themes among different disciplines, as a basis for constructing a general systems framework. This usage is very much in the spirit of GST. The second use is to apply them direct to the target domain, using them as descriptive and explanatory tools within specific organisational change situations.

4 Early perceptions of change summarised the 1960s. The rise of systems thinking as a discipline is one such example, although explicit application of systems theory to the organisation has been a more recent development. Many of the approaches overlap. Indeed, the whole literature can be seen as an interconnected, evolving knowledge set which is constantly being added to. Some are more centred on specific aspects of change, for example, information technology design and implementation. Others are concerned with change at a more generic level, such as quality orientated approaches.
