If she was successful at getting pity she felt contempt for the person fooled into offering it. " PLAN FOR CONFIGURATIONAL ANALYSIS 15 Initial Objective Description of the Patient The patient was casually dressed, attractive, slightly overweight. She communicated by using many facial expressions and hand movements for additional dramatic emphasis, but maintained a fixed smile; beneath it she seemed affectively flat. Her voice was high-pitched, sometimes strained with lapses into sounding childlike or wistful, especially when talking of her mother.

Subscales for somatization, obsessive-compulsive items, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, anger-hostility, phobic anxiety, paranoid ideation, and psychoticism have been established. Her highest scores at the pretherapy period were on the depression and obsessive-compulsive subscales. A graphic display of the scores on these scales, as well as her overall symptomatic level, indicates that there was a reduction in these main symptom patterns during the therapy, that the symptoms continued to abate in the posttreatment period, and that improvement was fairly well maintained over the ensuing year (see Figure 1).

After establishing a crude list of recurrent states, one may review all material to successively clarify each state. The list will be revised during this sequential clarification. Of course, review includes subsequent information used to elucidate the states as they tended to occur at the time of therapy onset. Details are added that may include the form and content of verbal and nonverbal communications observed during therapy. With elaboration of details one may obtain a fuller description of states, as illustrated in Table 5.
