Nevertheless the ‘researcher’ as a career type was sufficiently well developed in the Soviet Union to include it in our classification as a separate category. A research career was seen as one in which status and even a modicum of wealth and influence could be gained, without being fully subordinate to the strictures of the party or state hierarchies.
