In the leading societies, ideals were gradually revealed to members in the ritual. The very first experience of the new member was an initiation ceremony, when the values of the society were dramatically presented. These ceremonies have changed considerably over the years. It was only in 1843 that the Ancient Order of Foresters abandoned initiation by combat. Prior to that the candidate had been led in to the court room to be addressed by a chief ranger holding two cudgels.
