Furthermore, the current control modes are not sufficient. New modes that offer greater stability and provide further reductions and savings in energy must be developed. A concern at large-scale plants is that one accident can lead to a chain of others that will throw the central control area into a panic. To avoid this, it is necessary to have information that can lead to correct decision making and control modes that properly handle abnormal circumstances. We need further cooperation with a highly advanced field of electronic information technology and skilled engineers, and to continue striving to develop more useful systems.

GRATTAN WATER INDUSTRY AND USER NEEDS The requirement for water quality data has been assessed with particular consideration of the following topics: (i) Proof of compliance with relevant legislation (ii) Measurements needed for the operation and maintenance of water and waste water treatment and transport facilities (iii) Control of industrial effluent treatment. (a) Sampling Requirements These are detailed in the joint circular from the Department of the Environment and the Welsh Office (1982).

The continuing work on the provision of user specifications coupled with the instrument evaluations at present being carried out provided guidance both to those in research and to instrument and system manufacturers. It is hoped that the considerable impetus that has been provided in the ICA area will lead both to increased efficiency, in process control and environmental monitoring applications, and to the production by the Instrument Industry of equipment tailored more specifically to user needs.
