4. 4 Gender (a) masc. only (b) fem. only (c) masc. or fem. 4(c) are not permissible codas in Spanish, therefore an epenthetic –e appears after otherwise unsyllabifiable segments (Harris 1991; Klein 1989; among others). On the other hand, words such as col, sol, and atrás are syllabifiable without the addition of a final –e. Nonetheless, Gender Agreement 33 Harris admits to the availability of certain regularities in gender assignment, which he presents as a three-way separation of words by WMs: (1) inner core, (2) outer core, and (3) residue.
