The apparently successful currency union and enlargement process mitigate the cracks, but even the most fervent Euro-optimists have been feeling queasy lately. As the founding fathers knew well, if European Union is to work, ultimately it will be built from below, by the fulfilment of European ideals in the lives and practices of individuals: their work, their experiences, their relationships, their children. If there is such a thing as the European dream, it has to be found in the stories of real people.

So we looked around and found this place. We always wanted to live on a canal, but the quite simple reason why we live right here is that the bars we go to are just two minutes’ walk. My gym is a two minute walk in the other direction, and I just liked being in physically beautiful environments. I studied in Cambridge, I lived in a beautiful farm in Friesland, now we live here. You’ve got to be able to afford it. If you can afford it, you can do it [live in the centre as a foreigner]. In Friesland, we rented a farmhouse.

Although I did really want to go to Italy or South America, on the other hand I loved being in Brussels because I’d built up quite a good social network, and Almere was not so far away from that. So I can keep my friends in Brussels, it’s two to three hours, and it’s easy to get home to Northern Ireland. If I want to stay … I knew Amsterdam would be a pretty busy place to be, less of a culture shock.
