Design aims towards an integrated solution: a higher conception that goes beyond its stepping stones or constituents; a solution that makes sub problems disappear, so to speak. This sense of synthesis emanates from Hegel's philosophy. Hegel called "synthesis" the new idea that resolves the conflict between the initial proposition (thesis) and its negation (antithesis). Synthesis is the higher conception that involves but transcends both the initial conviction and its opposite. 1 Form and function Synthesis must provide for tentative solutions for design problems.
In one view synthesis and analysis are phases of the design process; in another view synthesis and analysis are functions that should be fulfilled by any problem-solving process. Inftuential early examples of the former view are Archer's Systematic method for designers , and Iones' Method of systematic design . They described synthesis and analysis as phases or stages of a largely linear process. Here, "synthesis" is the stage of finding possible solutions for subproblems and building up complete designs from these, whereas "analysis" includes the identification of subproblems and the preparation of performance specifications.
