In this way the metaphysical opposition between concept and metaphor is deconstructed by Derrida who develops a rhetorical writing, geared towards the trope and meant to replace metaphysical concepts with figures of speech such as trace or disse´mination (see Chapter 2, section 4). It is a non-conceptual and in part anti-conceptual writing determined to topple all hierarchies established by the philosophical logos and to straddle the boundaries between literature and philosophy.

Derrida, however, who has always attempted to deconstruct the metaphysical oppositions between central and marginal, main and derived, focuses his entire attention on these infelicities or ‘failed’ speech acts, which he believes to be behind the shifts of meaning in the sense of iterability. Far from being anomalies, they dominate the events of everyday language. Ultimately, Derrida concludes, Austin deconstructs his own theory by presenting a long list of exceptions or infelicities that occupy the centre of attention and cannot be considered as peripheral.

Although he regards Heidegger’s ontology in many respects as a continuation of logocentric metaphysics and although he holds against the author of the philosophy of Being his belief in the ‘presence of the voice’,21 Derrida relies on the Freiburg philosopher in order to challenge the concept of identity.
