In this r e g a r d , we a v o i d the use of nonconforming elements. Although the use of such elements reduces skilled programming effort by nearly an order of magnitude, it becomes virtually impossible to analyze any realistic three-dimensional problem by such a system. Indeed, a pilot study to compare the relative efficiency and accuracy of conforming and nonconforming elements shows that conforming elements are more accurate for the same number of quadratic elements and computing costs are much higher for nonconforming elements [ 2 9 ] .
A plate tectonics problem. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS A numerical model has been presented which does not have the drawbacks of the Finite Element and distinct element method for the analysis of geological media. The model can handle finite and infinite blocks of materials and faults or joints. It is particularly applicable to problems in geology and plate tectonics. 57 Only the plane formulation of the model has been presented here. Work is under way to extend the model's capabilities to three-dimensional analysis.
